Stacey MF'ing Abrams Candle
We listen to a lot of music around Effing Candle Co. HQ - when we pour the candles, when we pack the boxes, when we have "staff meetings" in the kitchen with the cats. We've been on an Angels & Airwaves (
ΛVΛ) kick lately. We're elder millennials around here and this music was the soundtrack of our 20's.
"Secret Crowds" is one of my favorite songs. Of all time. There's a line in the song that guides a lot of my life decisions:
"Watch our words spread hope like fire."
When I started Effing Candle Co., I wanted our candles to be more than a scent. I wanted to make people feel something. Maybe some give you a laugh (Josh Hawley Sucks/Fir Fuck's Sake/Head Bitch In Charge). Maybe others bring you comfort (Warm Hugs) and something to send someone when words just aren't enough. Sure, the candles can be "just a scent" but sometimes they're a little bit more.
We got popular by accident last year when we launched the Josh Hawley Sucks candle and, to be honest, that candle almost didn't happen. I was scared to put that candle out into the world because I was afraid that online bullies would make it impossible to exist, but that candle put us on the map. We're known for our "Politicians We Hate" candle collection and while that's served us for almost a year, it felt like it was time to create something for the civil servants we love.
There are so many we could have chosen, but Stacey Abrams is so inspiring. Her organization, Fair Fight, does absolutely incredible work. They've eliminated 210 million dollars in medical debt, they're working to expand Medicaid, they promote fair elections around the country, encourage voter participation in elections, and educate voters about elections and their voting rights...the list goes on and on.
Tonight, as we get ready for the launch of the Stacey MF'ing Abrams candle (Stacey MF'ing Abrams Eve?), we're listening to Angels & Airwaves and the lyrics hit a little harder than usual:
